Blog 2: IRC

A)   A real life example I found relating to rate of change is about the speed of an airplane, specifically an Airbus A380.
B)   The table below, which I created, shows the speed of the aircraft at given times. In this case, time 0 is right before takeoff begins. The question I will be trying to solve is what is the speed of the plane at 3 minutes.
C)

Time (min)

  1. I enjoyed reading your example of the speed of an airplane
you did great job in expelling the rate of change with table and chart, maybe i would add more typed explanations, because I couldn't read the picture
otherwise you did great job !!

  5. This was a good post on the changing dynamics of an airplane. It was interesting to see how fast the airplane speeds up.

  6. adam,

definitely a cool topic that you chose! your tables and graphs look good, however, it would have been better to see your explanation first then your images.

so, your question probably should have been "what is the acceleration of the plane at exactly 3 minutes" since calculating the speed for this example isn't related to the IRC. and if this is the question that you wanted to ask, then your secant line calculations should have all originated from the point t = 3 minutes. additionally, the IRC should have been calculated using a tangent line approximation, not the definition of the derivative.

other than these little snafoos, it's a nice post.

    professor little
